Faith Formation

Rite Of Christian Initiation

Sr. Michael Marie Hartman IHM, Coordinator; 410-284-0388

HISTORY

The RCI process is a privileged and challenging form of adult formation. It is a fully human process so that it may be fully open to the divine.  The Second Vatican Council called for a restoration of the tried and true ancient catechumenal process of conversion; the Rite of Christian Initiation is the result of that restoration.  St. Rita Church has used RCI since 1988.  RCI is a unique journey concerned with conversion and the falling in love with God in Christ.  It moves along using liturgical Rites.

STRUCTURE

The periods of Formation are four.  They begin with the Pre-catechumenate which is a time of Inquiry.  At the end of this period, the Rite of Acceptance is celebrated and the Order of Catechumens begins.  The Catechumenate is a time of formal instruction and preparation for full initiation in the Church.  This period concludes with the Rite of Election, celebrated with the Archbishop on the first Sunday of Lent.

During Lent, a period of Purification and Enlightenment begins during which catechumens reflect on their religious experience.  The climax of this period is the Easter Vigil when Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation are celebrated.  Mystagogia is a period of time when the newly initiated share in the sacramental life of the Church, especially the Eucharist. They read and study Scripture, perform acts of Christian service and develop a deeper understanding of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

PARTICIPANTS

Those who have never been baptized, those who have been baptized Catholic, but have never completed sacramental initiation (Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation), those who are interested in belonging to the St. Rita Faith Community are invited to be part of the process.

CLASSES

Classes are held each Sunday morning usually from 9 am to 10:45 am in the Spiritual Center in St. Rita Parish Center.  A Team of people from St. Rita Parish prepares and delivers classes which help seekers to experience inner conversion.
